Sometime, artistic vision is so far from practical vision. Ever heard
of the Time Pyramid? It's a monument that was conceived in 1993 to mark
the 1200th anniversary of the town of Wemding in Germany. It is
scheduled to be finished in 3183. Yes, you read it right, I'm not
pulling any bad joke on you. It will take another 1200 years for the
town of Wemding to see his monument finished. Every 10 years a new
block of stone or concrete will be placed in a specific pattern, for a
big total of 120 blocks in the form of a pyramid. Right now, two blocks
have been placed. The idea behind it was to show the world the real
length of 1200 years.
To insure that the monument will finish on schedule, the artist(Manfred
Laber) and the town of Wending created a foundation that will raise
fund, place new block at fixed moment, maintain the monument and repair
it if needs be. Since the materials and methods may change in the
futur(far futur for the last block), it is allowed to change the
composition of each futur block. I wonder what it will look like once
finished, will it be seen as the passing of time or something more?
None of us will live to see the end of it, wich is a complete lack of
practicality, yet it has its charm because it leave us with only a
blurry vision of it may be in the futur. Another thing to dream about.
